Oxygen Concentrators at Home: Setup and Safety
An oxygen concentrator draws in room air, removes most of the nitrogen, and delivers concentrated oxygen through a nasal cannula or mask. Unlike cylinders, it never runs out as long as it has power — which is why it has become the standard for long-term home oxygen therapy.
Placement matters. Keep the unit at least 30 cm from walls and curtains so the air intake is never blocked, in a dry, ventilated room away from direct sunlight. Do not place it in a closed cabinet.
Follow the flow rate your physician prescribed — never increase it on your own. Use a humidifier bottle with distilled water if dryness irritates the nose, and replace the water daily.
Oxygen does not burn by itself, but it makes everything else burn faster. Absolutely no smoking or open flames in the same room; keep the device at least 2 metres from heaters and stoves; avoid oil- or grease-based creams near the cannula; and post a no-smoking notice where visitors can see it.
Maintenance is simple but essential: wash or replace the gross particle filter weekly as the manual describes, replace the cannula regularly, and have the oxygen concentration checked during periodic service. Many concentrators alert you when purity drops.
Plan for power cuts: keep a backup cylinder if your therapy is continuous, and inform your electricity provider that a medical device is in use at your address. This article is general information, not medical advice.
