Pulse Oximeter Readings Explained: What Is a Normal SpO2?

A fingertip pulse oximeter shines two wavelengths of light through your finger to estimate how much of your hemoglobin is carrying oxygen. The result — SpO2 — appears within seconds alongside your pulse rate. For most healthy people at sea level, a normal SpO2 is between 95% and 100%. Values of 94% or below deserve attention, and persistent readings below 92% should be discussed with a clinician promptly, especially with symptoms such as shortness of breath or chest pain. Several everyday factors can distort readings: cold fingers, nail polish or artificial nails, poor circulation, movement during measurement, and very bright ambient light. Warm your hand, remove polish, sit still, and wait for a stable, strong pulse signal before trusting the number. A single value matters less than the trend. If you monitor a chronic condition, take readings at consistent times, in the same position, and log them. A steady decline over days is more meaningful than one odd measurement. Choose an oximeter with a clear display, a perfusion or signal-strength indicator, and automatic shut-off. Keep spare batteries — readings from a low-battery device are unreliable.
